Editor's Review & Recommendation
3 Minute Video Summary
When I was first giving GreenGeeks the once-over I was at first a little distressed that they seemed to only offer shared hosting plans. Then I found their VPS and dedicated server solutions buried at the bottom of their website which highlighted to me where their priorities were.
GreenGeeks ticks all the right boxes for those looking for a good web host. Their shared plans are impressive though and you can get many freebies here that other hosts wouldn’t hesitate to charge a premium for. Some examples of this include HTTP/2 access, tools for developers, free wildcard SSL, free domain for a year – the list goes on.
Even more impressive is that they have managed to cap the price of all of this to very decent figures, even considering increased prices upon renewal which almost all web hosting companies are doing.
GreenGeeks for Different Users
1. For Newbies and Individual Bloggers
Green hosting might not be the focus for bloggers and newbies to the web scene but the solid plans that GreenGeeks offers choices that are hard to beat.
There are many features designed to help users out in terms of usability such as 1-click free SSL installers, automated software updates, expert WordPress support, as well as free daily backup. Prices are also at manageable levels for almost any level of beginner.
2. For Freelancers & Small Business Owners
Although there are few additional benefits for freelancers and small business owners to opt for GreenGeeks, their basic proposition of offering eco-friendly hosting and access to a website builder combines well with their reasonable pricing.
GreenGeeks is also the hosting we recommended for freelancers as they offer features that support this role. Besides HTTP/2 being enabled by default, GreenGeeks uses MariaDB, optimized LiteSpeed web servers and PowerCache technology to boost server performance.
3. For Online Shops
Easy application installation and support for a wide variety of shopping carts makes a good case for online shop owners here. Add the good performance of GreenGeek servers to the mix and that works together well to translate into happy shoppers for those site owners.
One thing worth noting is that GreenGeeks offers Let's Encrypt SSL integration. You can either install Let's Encrypt Wildcard SSL for free or go with Premium AlphaSSL which needs to be purchased at additional cost. Either one is good enough to secure your online shop.
One concern is that shops which grow too large don’t have the option to move to Cloud hosting since it isn’t available here but to be honest, it isn’t likely often that many online shops grow to that extent.
4. For Agencies and Developers
GreenGeeks has gone the extra mile to make their hosting plans developer-friendly and the inclusion of support for Python, Perl and Git should make many happy. Good performance doesn’t hurt as well and the plans here could provide a very comfortable siloed environment for testing.
Onboarding Process with GreenGeeks Hosting
Although I usually don’t feel so much that the onboarding process needs to be a high focus area, I did notice something about GreenGeeks. Even during the purchase process for their plans, something about the look of the process slight perturbed me.
Unlike the sleek process that many web hosting companies have for their users, the one I went through here seemed like it was plucked from a third-party solutions provider and popped into the GreenGeeks process. It just looked and felt a little bit out of place.
